Coming up

A place to hang out

I want Helsinki Online to be a place where you just come to hang out. There will be events through the year: a Christmas event, Vappu, and a party in the city when Finland wins at sports. Meet people, join a game someone else made, or bring your friends over. Come as you are!

Events all year

A more beautiful Helsinki

I'm working on bringing the quality of the virtual Helsinki to the next level. I'm developing advanced methods for this, but it costs money. Every purchase helps me make the city a cooler place for us all!

District by district

More to do

Fishing, spray painting, skateboarding, building your own sauna raft, and whatever you suggest in the game. I want to hear what is important in your Helsinki!

Shaped by your ideas

Everyone who buys the game, tests it out, or brings their ideas and vibe to the Discord helps make Helsinki Online a truly unique and new kind of experience. Let's make this really cool, together. Thank you!

Is my home in the game?

If you live in Helsinki, yes. The whole city is in the game, street by street, built from the city's open data. Citizen and Supporter play all of it; the free Visitor area is Kauppatori and Senaatintori. Type your address to see where it is.

Dark line: the edge of the game world. Citizen and Supporter play everything inside it. Blue: the free Visitor area, open from Thursday 5.11. at 18:00.

Addresses are looked up with Nominatim, the OpenStreetMap search: what you type goes there, nothing is saved here. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors

Questions

Does it run on my computer?

Most likely. It runs in a modern browser on most computers made in the last few years, Windows or Mac. Chrome and Edge work best; Firefox on Windows and Safari 26 on a Mac should work too. On Linux it runs in Chrome on many computers (newer Intel graphics, or NVIDIA with Wayland); other setups may need a browser setting. The game needs WebGPU: the play page checks it before you buy. Phones and tablets are not supported yet.

Do I need to install anything?

No. You play in the browser. The first visit downloads about 130 MB of the city; later visits are faster.

What is the difference between Supporter, Citizen and Visitor?

Supporter costs a bit more and supports the game directly: you play from Thursday 29 October, a week before everyone else, and get the party hat, the golden goose (it unlocks after the goose story) and a Supporter role on Discord. Buy before Thursday 5 November at 18:00 (Finnish time) and you also get a Founder badge. Citizen opens the whole city from 5 November. Visitor is free and lets you explore Kauppatori and Senaatintori. These are early access prices: they may change later, for example at full release, but never for what you already bought.

Can I get a refund?

Yes, within 14 days of buying if you have played less than 1 hour in the world, or if the game does not run properly on your computer. Email pietari@albedo.fi first.

Is there a Steam version?

Yes, later: Helsinki Online will launch on Steam for Windows, with no date fixed yet. Supporter and Citizen buyers get a Steam key for it by email when it launches. Versions for Mac or Linux may come later but are not promised; the browser version runs on a Mac today.

Is my home in the game?

If you live in Helsinki, yes: the whole city is in the game, and Citizen and Supporter can buy a flat in any apartment building. Type your address in the map above to check. Every home in the game is the buyer's own copy and nobody can look up who owns a flat, but we still suggest not picking the one you really live in.

Will the game change?

Helsinki Online is in early access and keeps changing. Screenshots and videos may not match the game as it is today, and things will keep changing as it grows.

Is it OK for my child?

Players must be 13 or older; the game asks the year and month of birth once and keeps only the age group. Accounts of 13 to 17 year olds start with safer settings: friend requests only from players they have met, their map position shown only to friends, and a home that cannot be opened to everyone. Chat is filtered automatically and anyone can mute, block and report. Buying needs a parent's permission under 18. Questions or a child's account to delete: pietari@albedo.fi.

Do I need to be online?

Yes. Helsinki Online is an online game: it runs on our servers, and your progress is saved on your account, so you can carry on from another computer. If the game ever shuts down, we announce it at least 90 days before.
